People as Plants
Growth
This portrait honors Hixson’s grandmother, whom he remembers primarily as a gardener. Drawn in charcoal, derived from plant matter, the work was created within garden and greenhouse spaces, embedding her lived environment into the process itself. The branching structure mirrors a life rooted in patience, nurture, and continual growth. The jade itself is from a cutting, Hixson grew from when he was eleven years old. The mother plant be gifted to his mother upon his birth from his grandmother.
