Cut Away portrays Hixson’s father following surgery to remove stage-four cancer. Constructed from cut paper within a lighted shadow box, the black paper represents illness, while the removal of the fern form allows light to pass through, symbolizing survival and renewed life. The act of cutting becomes both surgical and devotional, transforming absence into hope.
